Bethel Outing Club Summer Nordic Program Descriptions

Welcome to the Bethel Outing Club Summer Nordic Program. This youth program is designed to help skiers develop skills to improve their winter skiing. Our knowledgeable coaching team is led by Marcus Wentworth and Brad Clarke, with guest appearances from other local coaches, including former US Ski Team coach Dick Taylor. We strive to create a fun environment and a good peer group for the participants to have a variety of training partners and enjoy the social aspects of skiing. Our program has a solid success rate, with 80% of our high school aged participants qualifying for U16 & Eastern High School Championships the following winter.

We are excited to announce a new structure for program participants to tailor their summer training to best fit their individual needs. Please check out the following descriptions (3 options, plus supplemental strength program, as well as a June Extension) to see what will best fit you or your child.

Option 1: One-day per week program

Ages:  12 & up
Fee: $100.00
Sessions: Tuesdays: 4:00pm  6:00pm * at Pine Hill
Dates: June 26th  August 14th
Number of Sessions: 8

These sessions introduce middle school and newer skiers to the basics of good summer training. Advanced skiers will do bounding intervals/speed work and receive technique instruction.

Athlete Equipment Needs: Running shoes, short ski poles, water, snack

Option 2: Two-days per week program

Ages: 12 & up

Fee: $200.00

Sessions:

Tuesdays: 4:00pm 6:00pm* at Pine Hill

Thursdays: 9:00am  11:00am* at Jordan Woods off the North Road

Dates: June 26th August 16th

Tuesdays (see description above). Thursdays are intro to rollerskiing for middle school and newer skiers. More advanced skiers will do technique drills, long intervals, and/or specific strength.

Athlete Equipment Needs: clothing, water, snack

Helmet, skate boots, rollerskis**, ski poles, high visibility

Option 3:Three-days per week program

Ages: 15 & up 

Fee: $300.00

Dates: June 22nd – August 10th

Number of Sessions: 23

Sessions

Mondays: 9:00am–11:00am at Flat Road (Meet at intersection with Grover Hill Rd)

Tuesdays: 4:00pm–6:00pm at Pine Hill

Thursdays: 9:00am–11:00am at Jordan Woods off the North Road

Tuesdays and Thursdays (see descriptions above). Mondays are advanced rollerskiing intervals for athletes who have plenty of rollerski experience and a high degree of comfort on rollerskis. Skiers in this program will alternate between bounding/running and rollerskiing. This will include 3000m and double pole testing at the beginning and end of the summer program. Participants in this program are strongly encouraged to keep a training log. Training log analysis is offered as part of this program.

June Extension***

Ages: 15 & up 

Fee: No Additional Charge 

Sessions: 

Mondays: 4:00pm–6:00pm at Flat Road (Meet at intersection with Grover Hill Rd)

Tuesdays: 4:00pm–6:00pm at Pine Hill 

Thursdays: 4:00am–6:00pm Jordan Woods off the North Road

Dates: June 14th – June 25th

These sessions are provided to those athletes who wish to extend their time with a training group. Sessions will have the same focus by day as outlined above in the three day program. Participation in this extension will not affect further summer training within this program. The times for these sessions apply only to the sessions within the June Extension. Starting June 26th sessions will run at their normal times as specified in the previous options: 9am–11am Monday and Thursday, 4pm–6pm Tuesday.

Supplemental Strength Program

Ages:  15 & up

Fee:  No Additional Fee

Sessions:

Tuesdays: 3pm – 4pm* TBD 

Fridays: 8:00am – 9:00am* TBD

Schedule is subject to change.

June 26th – August 10th

Dates:
Number of Sessions: 14

Strength sessions are provided as an extra option for advanced athletes looking to improve whole body strength and coordination as well as injury prevention measures. This is intended for athletes who are at the end of their growth spurt and have good core strength. 

Athlete Equipment Needs: CLEAN running shoes, water, snack

Notes:

* = Sessions often go slightly longer than planned. Please be prepared to pick up you child at the set end time, but be patient while we wrap up practice (I’d suggest brining some light reading).

** = BOC has some rollerskis available to loan to athletes at practices, with priority given to younger athletes. Advanced athletes are encouraged to provide their own.

*** = Athletes wishing to add the June extension must also register for one of the other three options listed.

The Bethel Outing Club also offers scholarships for program participants who are current BOC members. Memberships are $5.00 for athletes or $15.00 for families and can be renewed/purchased on BOC’s website (www.bethelouting.org). Please see the scholarship document for further details.
