An Appeal to Support Bethel Area Skiers in 2016 (donation form at bottom of page)

Dear Club,

You've probably heard the news, but in case you haven't, it's my pleasure to congratulate Andrew Siegel and Marcus Wentworth for making the 2016 New England Junior National Team!  Andrew and Marcus qualified as U18s, and to say that this field is stacked with talented skiers would be an understatement. Congratulations you two for making the cut.

Last year, I reached out to you when Marcus made the JN team as a U16.  I made a plea for the club to help support his trip to the JNs as if such trip were an anomaly.  The great news for our club is that it appears that success at this high level is becoming more consistent, maybe even the rule instead of the exception.

If our programs are strong enough to develop athletes of this caliber, are we ready to support them when they succeed?  I hope so.  It's worth acknowledging that if success  becomes more regular, the annual "ask" of the Club for athlete development may become a significant budget line.

In addition to Junior Nationals, the qualifier for the Maine teams that go to the U16 championships and the Eastern High School Championships (EHSC) are March 5th.  I potentially see a half dozen athletes from our Club that could qualify for each team.  Indulge me in some quick math:

JN trip cost x 2 = $6,266

The New England Junior National team is comprised of a few dozen of the fastest kids from New England.  This year the event is in Hayward, WI.

Each athlete is responsible for:

Registration: $2,470

Travel: $415

Uniform: $250

EHSC trip cost x 6 = $2,100

The Maine team that goes to the Eastern High School Championship is comprised of the 24 fastest boys and girls from Maine.  This year the event is in Ripton, VT.

Each athlete is responsible for:

Registration: TBD, approx $350

Uniform: $100

U16 trip cost x 6 = $1,740

The Maine team to the U16 championship is comprised of the fastest 24 boys and girls ages 14 and 15 from the State.  This year the event is at Black Mt. in Rumford.

Each athlete is responsible for:

Registration: $290

Uniform: $100

Total athlete trip expenses = $8,780 plus uniforms and travel

The Board voted last fall that the Athlete Funding Committee has discretion to fund up to half of an athlete's registration expenses.  To fund just half of the registration costs for these trips would be $4,240.  I'd like to help make the decision making process for the Committee a little bit easier.  In lieu of pulling together a quick fundraiser and asking for everyone's time, I'd like to make a direct plea and ask for a financial contribution to the Club. Remember, the BOC is a 501c3, so all contributions are tax-deductible.

These end of season festivals (JNs, EHSCs, and U16s) are a chance to celebrate the accomplishments of the previous season, but when you talk to our athletes, Andrew and Marcus in particular, they talk about the experience of going to JNs as a beginning.  It's a chance for them to see how they stack up against the best skiers in the country and set the next ambitious goal for their ski careers.

If you're able, please donate online below, or make a check out to the "Bethel Outing Club" with a note saying "to support athlete development" and send to:
